What is podcasting?

Podcasting is a combination of internet technologies that enable broadcasting short audio programs for users to download and listen to. SGRO Consulting is now offering a brief podcast offering organizing tips.

What do the little buttons do?

It has become standard to provide links to podcast content as small badge buttons. They each represent a different method of accessing the podcast episodes. This section explains what each button does and what software is required.

You do not need to download or use any additional software if you want to listen to the newest episode only and do not wish to subscribe to the podcast. If you click the MP3 button, your web browser will download the audio file to your computer and you can listen to it in a media player of your choice. The audio file may open directly in your browser window if you have Apple's QuickTime software installed.

Apple's iTunes Music Store provides a directory of podcasts which users can download a la carte or subscribe to. This requires the free iTunes media player for either Mac OS or Windows, which you can download from Apple.

One of the important technologies used in podcasting is RSS (Really Simple Syndication). There are several free programs called RSS aggregators which periodically check the XML file which contains the RSS data and will automatically download new episodes of a podcast. NetNewsWire Lite is a free RSS aggregator for Mac OS and SharpReader is a free aggregator for Windows. If you use an aggregator program, click on this link to add the SGRO Consulting feed to it.
